What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a normal, natural, trance like state that allows the individual to have create focused attention, without the usual everyday distractions.  Trance states are something we already move in and out of, quite naturally, many times within the day.  Day dreaming, for example, is a form of trance and we daydream for example when walking the dog, out for a run, watching the TV and even when we are driving (ever driven somewhere and can only remember a fragment of the journey?!).Trance is therefore completely natural and necessary for our wellbeing and not to be concerned about, although perhaps we should try not do it so much when we are driving......

Put simply, hypnosis is merely the natural harnessing of focused thought and it is what we focus on that provides us with an emotional response.  When we want to be somewhere else, or achieving something, we imagine it.  So, if you imagine lying on a sunny beach in your favourite holiday destination or winning that sporting event.  Both situations involve working your imagination and this is a trance state also.  Therefore, when this trance state is replicated and appropriately placed in a therapeutic setting, it can be extremely helpful to the client.  This is what hypnosis helps the client to do.

When entering hypnosis you are in a relaxed and pleasant, but concentrated state of mind, where you have a far heightened awareness.

It is said that our mind is more active and alert when we are dreaming, usually at night.  Hypnosis replicates this ‘dream like’ state during your session in the therapist’s practice, and whilst your mind is in this state, the subconscious mind is actually working really hard and is more susceptible to positive suggestion and subsequent therapeutic change.  In reality, the dreaming mind , as shown within neuroscientific testing, can be working up to 4 times as hard than say, the awake concentration required to sit a math’s exam back at school.  Hypnosis simply uses the natural ability and power of the resting mind to create a lasting and hugely effective, positive outcomes to a wide variety of symptoms.  All of which create massive beneficial impact to our client's lives as a whole.
